Harsh winter months
Winter in Bosnia & Herzegovina is particularly hard for people living in poverty. Extremely low temperatures, high fuel bills and a rising cost of living are pushing many people to their limits.
When the cold creeps in through the window
Mensura Uzunalić knows the hardships of winter. The 67-year-old lives with her sick son in Zvornik in the north-eastern part of the country. Their home was previously a cinema. The high ceilings and draughty windows allow the heat to escape quickly. Mensura used to laboriously gather wood by the river every day so that she could keep the stove alight, at least for a short while.
With support from the 2 x Christmas campaign, she can now buy fuel and stock up her larder. For the first time in years, she no longer needs to fear the cold and damp that creep into her bones.
Support that makes life easier
The Bosnia & Herzegovina Red Cross provides support for particularly vulnerable people, who receive financial assistance and decide for themselves what they most urgently need: heating fuel, foodstuffs, hygiene products, medicines, or paying important bills.
For Mensura Uzunalić, this help means a warm home and some comfort. The support she receives from the 2 x Christmas campaign makes a significant difference for her over the winter.
